Northern Ireland tagging guidance 2026 & 2027

Please be aware of voluntary changes to tagging in 2026 and 2027. 


Voluntary Bovine EID

Northern Ireland is planning a phased transition to bovine Electronic Identification (EID). Voluntary use of EID cattle tags begins in September 2026. Mandatory EID implementation for all newborn calves is anticipated during 2027. 

Shearwell Data and our exclusive supplier in Northern Ireland, Joseph Walls Ltd, are approved to supply official cattle EID tags once the scheme is introduced. 

As part of our range, we supply an EID flag tag that can take a tissue sample for BVD or DNA, if you are genotyping your herd as part of the Bovine Genetics Project. 


NI Bovine Genetics Project

Shearwell Data is an approved tag supplier for the NI Bovine Genetics Project.

Genotyping with a DNA tag for the existing breeding herd begins September 2026.

Genotyping with a BVD tag and DNA tag for calves begins January 2027.
